No more Pixar!? 01.25.2006

Well, it appears rumors have been confirmed, Pixar is in the process of being bought by disney.  I was a little worried about this at first because big corporations like Disney have a thing about buying small companies and destroying any good that was in them.  With the new leadership in Disney though I think there might be a chance.  Also, Pixar’s operations won’t be changed at all, the only change will be the removal of Steve Jobs as president.  Also on the upside, Steve Jobs now has a seat on the board of directors, and one of the top Pixar guys is in the Inagineering department now.  So good things for Disney on the way (I’ve gotta buy some stock).

Redmond’s Copiers Running Full Force 01.19.2006

It seems that when Steve Jobs said “Redmond, start your copiers” someone listened.  And how they’re copying like mad.

First, watch this.

You probably don’t have to watch the whole thing.  For non techies, this is a preview of a new version of windoze that will be coming out later this year.

Then watch this.

These are clips of Mac OS X which has been available since March 24, 2001.  Granted, not ALL of the features were implemented immediately (the second set of clips shows dates for many of them) but all the clips were shot with a version released in April of 2005.

I’d say something about how I think microsoft might be copying OS X, but I think the videos speak for themselves…

MacWorld 01.11.2006

So MacWorld keynote today, the big item being the MacBook Pro. Aside from being dual core and 4x as fast, my favorite feature is the MagSafe power plug. It uses a magnet to guide the plug into place and hold it there so if someone trips over the cord, it just disconnects instead of sending your MacBook flying.

New Intel commercial was nice (see the keynote), and I think Intel is moving in a positive direction by joining with Apple. As Apple moves more into the entertainment market (I’m thinking MediaCenter MacMini is coming soon) Intel has a great opportunity to make several different kinds of chips for Apple’s products. And although I’ll miss the huge pipes of the PPC, x86 opens so many doors for compatibility with the rest of the PC industry.  (I can’t wait to build my own Mac).

The compatibility step begs the question, could this be the end of a long fought processor war?  If Apple goes x86, sure there will still be a FEW PPC processors around (Apple is sitcking to G5s for a while I belive in its server platforms), but any new home computers will be x86.  And Already PCs are ATX standardized (Macs too for the most part).  This means soon the only difference between systems is going to be the software (this article points out that this might be Apple’s key to staying in the market, though I disagree).

The iPod radio is also pretty cool, its about time they made one of those, I also heard rumor (though I can’t find the link now) that coming iPods might include an FM Transmitter so you don’t have to go buy one separately.

All in all, my Apple stock is way up.
